The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Northwest Passage followed his easy win in the Hobart Guineas (Listed, 2100m) on 22 January to remain unbeaten in two Tasmanian starts in winning here but not without some anxious moments when under pressure nearing the home turn. He had travelled well in third place, one off the rails, before responding to riding in the straight to take the lead at the 200m. He then drew away over the closing stages to score clearly in a solid staying effort. The Danny O’Brien-trained French Snitzel tracked the leader (Shadow Prince), challenged at the 200m and then battled on well to hold second, having no chance with the winner in the in the latter stages. Igitur was back in eighth place on the rails to the 600m and plugged on well in the straight to dead-heat for third with Autmed who also kept plugging on nicely, coming from back in fifth place while Shadow Prince led the field clearly to the home turn but tired in the straight to finish fifth.
