Criterion settled well back in tenth place from his wide barrier (12) before improving along the rails from the 600m. He got through on the inside turning for home, took the lead at the 300m and then drew right away for an easy three and a half length win, running the 2000m out strongly. It was an impressive win a great trial for the ATC Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) at Randwick on 12 April. Thunder Fantasy was seventh between runners, improved (wide) rounding the home turn. He challenged at the 200m and fought on for a sound second, having no chance with the winner. Teronado was midfield on the rails, made good ground between runners approaching the turn and looked a threat at the 200m. He kept battling on from that point to take third, beaten five lengths. Savvy Nature was ninth to the 600m, went to the centre on straightening and battled on quite well for fourth. Hooked was seventh to the 600m, went very wide at the turn, put in a good run half-way down the straight before finishing fifth. Dissident ($4.25 eq fav) was a handy fifth to the 600m, moved up at the turn but that run was short-lived and he held on for sixth, beaten six and quarter lengths. NZ Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Puccini ($4.25 eq fav) was second in the early stages before taking a clear lead at the 1000m. He then held the lead to the home turn but disappointed in the straight, tiring for 12 lengths twelfth. The dual Group One winner Shamus Award led, racing below his best on the Slow7 track after over-racing and dropped out to finish 19 lengths second last in the 15-horse field. *ANZ
