Shooting To Win was slowly away from the gates before improving his position to settle down in fifth position on the fence, about five lengths from the leader Valentia. He travelled well in the middle stages, when the pace slackened, to be tracking the leader approaching the home turn. He switched back to the fence and quickened in the lead at the 200m before drawing right away for a most impressive victory. Scissor Kick had no luck again. He settled down in third position one out before being pushed three wide at the 900m when Modoc pushed off the fence. He was then trapped three wide in a packing field and was over racing a little, coming under pressure approaching the home turn. He then responded gallantly but could only battle on at one pace to grab second right on the line. Valentia enjoyed a nice run in front. He quickened the tempo approaching the home turn, moving away from the fence on cornering for home, but he could not match the turn of foot of the winner and stayed on gamely for third. Bachman put in an improved effort coming from third last to close late for fourth. He will appreciate a step up in distance.
