Sweynesse was away well but was restrained to settle down last two wide about six lengths from the early leader Lord Beckworth who set a solid pace. Sweynesse travelled well into the race tracking Pounamu into the race three wide from the 600m before turning for home four wide. He quickened smartly when asked for his effort at the 300m to hit the front at the 200m and draw away to a comfortable victory to remain undefeated in four runs. Diamond Valores was a little slowly away before being used up to initially settle down in third, one out one back. He improved his position at the 1200m to race on the quarters of Lord Beckworth. He pressured the leader approaching the home turn, cornering for home in front before kicking clear at the 300m. He battled then fought on gamely the whole way to the line finding the winner a little too good. A sound effort in defeat. Pounamu settled down on the back of the leaders in third position on the fence before being shuffled back to fourth one out with a trail. He commenced his run three wide from the 600m with the favourite tracking him into the race. He could not match the winners turn of foot and stayed on at one pace, for a well beaten third.
