Dwayne Dunn rode Shamal Wind perfectly, reserving her to use her renowned finishing dash. He kept her back, behind runners, in fourth place until the 400m. He asked her to sprint on passing the 200m and she produced a great turn of foot to race away for a comfortable two and a quarter length win in a smart first-up performance. Vatican went straight to the front, fought off challengers in the early part of the straight, and although he had no answer to the winner’s late bid, he did very well to take a good first-up second. Moment Of Change raced in third place and moved up well on straightening. He looked a threat at the 300m but battled from that point for a good first-up third under his big weight (61.5kg). Favourite The Quarterback was most disappointing, racing well below his excellent recent form. He was ridden back in the field as usual but failed to run on, finishing finished (6.9 lengths) last in the six-horse field.
