Thump worked from her good barrier (3) to hold the lead and was then pressured in by Sweet Idea. After covering the first 600m in a fast 34.51, she grabbed a break on turning for home. She then dug deep in the straight and fought back to win narrowly, but impressively after her early efforts. The favourite Sweet Idea was wide early before moving to second outside the leader. She continued to apply pressure to the leader and she briefly looked beaten on straightening but came back gamely to fail by the barest of margins for a gutsy second. It was reported later that Sweet Idea bled from both nostrils during the race and has been stood down for three months. Montsegur raced in fifth pace, trapped a little wide, before moving up well wide out rounding the home turn. She improved to third at the 100m and kept battling on to hold that position to the post, beaten just under two lengths. Twilight Royale was caught wide from her outside barrier (7) and was eased to settle at the tail of the field. She improved wide from the 600m, got a run between runners at the 300m and kept running on for a sound first-up fourth. Killcareless was a handy third to the 600m, moved up three wide at the turn and kept battling on quite well in the straight for a sound fifth. *ANZ
