Lightly raced four-year-old Chautauqua put up a most impressive first-up performance. He settled back behind a packed field, travelling in 15th place to the 400m. Dwayne Dunn then eased him into clear running (towards the grandstand side) and he produced a dazzling turn of foot from the 100m to win easily by two and a half lengths in fast time (1:08.11). Temple Of Boom was a handy fifth in the centre of the track before challenging on passing the 200m. He then held on well for a good second, conceding 5.5 kilos to the winner. In Cahoots was midfield, between runners in about ninth place. He put in a run at the 300m, challenged at the 100m and then battled on nicely for a good third. Speediness was last in the 18-horse field to the 600m. He switched wide at the 400m and kept making good ground for a very promising first-up (2.9 lengths) fourth. Sistine Demon led the field until the final 100m and held on quite well for a sound first-up fifth, beaten three lengths. Akavoroun was 14th (between runners in the centre of the track) to the 400m. He got a split at the 200m and kept battling on in honest fashion for (3.2 lengths) sixth.
