Hauraki secured his first Group 1 success when claiming a narrow victory in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) at Randwick on Saturday.
Settling back in the field for much of the race, Hauraki made good ground late to get up in the final stride over Dibayani in second with Mackintosh not far away in third.
Hauraki returned a new career peak Timeform figure of 125, one pound above his second placing in the Colgate Optic White George Main Stakes (1600m) behind Winx last start.
The John O Shea-trained runner is the highest rated winner of the race since Boban in 2013 (123) with Winx running to 122+ (before her mares allowance) in last years renewal.
Hauraki will now head towards the Group 1 Cox Plate later this month to take on Winx who interestingly became only the third horse in history to win the Epsom – Cox Plate double in the same year in 2015.
Prior to that you have to go back to 1932 which saw Chatham do the double, with Nightmarch in 1929 the only other runner to win both races in the same year.
The Racing and Sports field strength value of 120.8 was higher than the 2015 renewal of 117.8 which saw Winx beat Ecuador and Sons Of John.
Having taken out the Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) earlier in the preparation, Hauraki is the first winner since Chanteclair in 1986 to complete the Tramway – Epsom double in the same year.
Of the beaten runners Dibayani ran up to his previous peak Timeform rating of 121, last achieved when runner up in the Group 1 Chipping Norton earlier in the year.
Mackintosh who was not far away in third ran to a new peak figure of 116, four pounds higher than his Group 2 Theo Marks win the start prior and will also likely progress to the Group 1 Cox Plate.
Sir John Hawkwood produced a terrific effort to take out the Group 1 Metropolitan (2400m) in what was his first Group 1 attempt.
Returning well behind McCreery in the Group 3 Kingston Town, Sir John Hawkwood relished the extra distance with Blake Spriggs on board, claiming victory from Antonio Giuseppe in second with Allergic third.
Sir John Hawkwood returned a new career peak Timeform figure of 118, two pounds higher than his second placing in the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m) last campaign with the win also bringing up a maiden Group 1 win for jockey Blake Spriggs.
2015 winner Magic Hurricane ran to 121, the highest rated winner of the race in the last 25 years although outside of him Glencadam Gold (119) is the only other runner in the last five years to run a higher winning figure.
The Racing and Sports field strength value of 115.2 is relatively low for a Group 1 race and significantly lower than the 119.2 from last years renewal.
Antonio Giuseppe made the step up to Group 1 company in good order running a solid second off four straight wins in Benchmark races.
The Chris Waller-trained runner returned a new career peak Timeform figure of 112, seven pounds higher than his previous win at Rosehill with Allergic running to 109 in third, five pounds below his best.
Global Glamour grabbed the final Group 1 of the day when holding off Yankee Rose in the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) after leading throughout.
Finding the line well enough for sixth in the Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) behind Foxplay, Global Glamour showed significant improvement off that effort and returned a career peak Timeform figure of 114p, eight pounds higher than her Tea Rose run.
Global Glamour is the second lowest winner of the race since Ha Ha in 2001, with only 2015 winner Speak Fondly (110) running a lower winning figure during that time.
With both the leading three-year-old filly’s of the season (going into the race) Omei Sword and Foxplay missing, that set it up well for Global Glamour who you would think needs to improve again to measure up in Melbourne spring feature racings.
Yankee Rose who finished second has not quite reached the heights this campaign she did as a two-year-old but was solid again, returning a figure of 112 and should she progress to the Spring Champion has scope for improvement off this run.
Sezanne in third ran up to her Tea Rose Stakes effort returning a Timeform figure of 107.
Russian Revolution led all the way to claim a narrow victory over Astern in the Group 2 Roman Consul (1200m) with Capitalist one length away in third.
Russian Revolution, who still remains undefeated from four career outings returned a new career peak Timeform figure of 120, 11 pounds higher than his Vain Stakes victory.
The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained runner certainly has plenty of ability and is the second highest rated winner of the race in the last 10 years with Exosphere (127) the highest during that time.
Astern was once again very good in second, after getting back in the run and returned a Timeform figure of 119p, seven pounds below his Golden Rose win.
Capitalist in third was also solid, running to 115, one pound higher than his first up effort and certainly looks to have a race win in him this preparation.
All three placegetters could meet again at Group 1 level in the Coolmore Stakes at Flemington on Derby Day and whilst Astern would have lost no admirers , Russian Revolution looks one with plenty of ability.
