3 minute read

She Will Reign remains undefeated following a win in the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.

Having followed up a debut win at Kembla Grange with a dominant four length victory in the Inglis Nursery before a spell, the Gary Portelli-trained runner has now cemented herself as the current Golden Slipper favourite.

Missing the start and settling last in the field, jockey Ben Melham took the filly along the rail coming into the straight and hitting the lead inside the 300m, ran out an easy one-and-a-half-length winner over Veranillo in second with Showtime third.

She Will Reign returned a new career peak Timeform figure of 116, two pounds higher than her previous best in the Inglis Nursery.

The daughter of Manhattan Rain returned a figure considerably higher than the 2016 winner Astern (109p), running the same number as the last filly to win the race, Mossfun in 2014 (116).

In the last 25 years only two runners have completed the Silver Slipper-Golden Slipper double being Pierro (2012) and Mossfun (2014) with others to complete the feat being Eskimo Prince (1963/64), Baguette (1969/70) and Luskin Star (1996/97).

She Will Reign will be looking to join Mossfun as the only filly to complete the double who also took out the Inglis Nursery running to 99+ on that occasion when on debut.

The Racing and Sports field strength value of 115.7 is around par for a two-year-old group 2 race and considerably higher than the 106.9 of last years renewal and also above the 111.9 in 2014 which saw Mossfun get the better of Press Report.

Of the beaten runners, Veranillo ran to a new career peak figure of 114, three pounds higher than his first up win at Randwick with Showtime in third running to a clear new peak of 113 some 13 pounds higher than his previous best.

Well fancied runner Khan was disappointing back in the field not beating a runner home but would not be ruling him out just yet following a very good debut win in the Breeders’ Plate and running to 113 on that occasion.

Man From Uncle

Man From Uncle continued his strong recent form with a win in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m), following a first up win in the Group 3 Eskimo Prince Stakes (1200m).

Settling around midfield, Man From Uncle made good ground over the concluding stages to run out a narrow win over Echo Effect in second with Comin’ Through third.

The Anthony Cummings-trained runner returned a clear new peak Timeform figure of 117, 10 pounds above his first up win in the Group 3 Eskimo Prince Stakes the start prior.

Man From Uncle ran to the same Timeform figure as 2016 winner Press Statement and just one pound below Hallowed Crown who took our the 2015 renewal.

Since becoming the Randwick Guineas in 2006 over 1600m (Formerly the Canterbury Guineas over 1800m-1950 throughout history), three runners have completed the Hobartville- Randwick Guineas double being Ilovethiscity (2011), Dissident (2014) and Hallowed Crown (2015).

Prior to that Fairway was the last runner to complete the double in 2000, taking out the Canterbury Guineas following victory in the Hobartville Stakes.

Man From Uncle continues to stake his claims as a leading three-year-old going into the autumn feature races and is certainly worth keeping an eye on.

Of the placegetters, Echo Effect ran to a clear new peak figure of 116, 20 pounds above his previous best although would like to see him run near that figure again going forward.

Comin’ Through was also not far away in third ran to 114, six pounds above his fifth placing in the Eskimo Prince and one pound below his win in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes last campaign.

In Her Time

The final group race of the day saw In Her Time claim her fourth win of the day when taking out the Group 2 Mille Fox Stakes (1300m).

Settling up on the speed, The Ben Smith-trained runner ran away from her rivals over the concluding stages with Euro Angel well back in second narrowly ahead of Daysee Doom in third.

In Her Time ran to a new career peak Timeform figure of 111, four pounds higher than her win in the Group 2 Breeders Classic (1200m) the start prior.

The race has seen some very good mares win over the years, with Red Tracer claiming the Millie Fox three times, followed by Catkins and First Seal.

Whilst not quite running up to the same figure as those three mare, In Her Time is the lowest rated winner since Montana Flyer in 2010 (105).

2016 winner First seal returned a Timeform figure of 116 with Catkins running to 113 in 2015.

The Coolmore Classic (1500m) looms as an option for In Her Time although the 1500m journey could be enough for connections to look elsewhere.

Euro Angel was good in second place first up from a spell and ran to 101, her highest rating since winning in Group 3 company at Caulfield last year (105) with Daysee Doom in third running to 99, two pounds below her win at Rosehill before a spell last year.

She Will Reign put up a very impressive effort in winning here and maintaining her unbeaten record, now winning all three starts. She was surprisingly slow to move and settled at the tail of the seven-horse field. She improved along the inner from the 600m getting through to be third on straightening. She dashed to the front at the 200m and then went on to score comfortably. She is now the TAB’s $3.00 favourite for the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) on 18 March and should prove hard to beat after this very smart performance. Veranillo raced outside the leader (Mystic Empire), went to the front briefly at the 300m and then fought on well for second, having no chance with the winner in the latter stages. Showtime settled in fourth place on the rails, put in a run from the 300m and kept fighting on nicely to take the minor placing while the second favourite Khan disappointed. He settled back in second last place in the seven-horse field, got along the rails at the home turn but failed to much ground and then weakened for (6.4 lengths) last perhaps being affected by the Soft 5 conditions.
