Timeform Recap - 2017 Chelmsford Stakes

3 minute read

Winx has yet again produced a terrific final 400m to claim victory in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on Saturday.

Jumping away with the field, Winx settled in a handy spot fifth throughout with Josh Parr and Red Excitement surging to the front to take a big lead for much of the race.

With Red Excitement showing no signs of slowing down coming to the turn, and leading by six lengths to Chocante in second, Hugh Bowman urged Winx into fourth and set out after the leader.

Moving into second at the 300m and still well off Red Excitement, Winx knuckled down nicely the final 200m to claim a one length victory over the brave Red Excitement in second with Chocante well back in third.

In what was yet another thrilling finish for the mare, Winx ran up to her Warwick Stakes effort, returning a Timeform figure of 118+, which is not too far afield from her last three second up efforts.

Similarly to her first up run in the Warwick Stakes, whilst nowhere near her peak rating of 134, it took a horse with that rating to be able to do what she did and run down Red Excitement.

Winx generally runs a lower rating when second up, running to 124+ when second up in the Chipping Norton last campaign, the lowest of that preparation, running 122+ when second up in the George Main Stakes the preparation prior, also the lowest of that campaign.

Winx who has now won 19 straight is the first mare to win the Chelmsford Stakes since Gallant Tess in 2008 and is the highest rated mare to win the race in the last 25 years.

Red Excitement produced an outstanding effort in second and returned a new career peak Timeform figure of 120, two pounds above his effort in the Warwick Stakes the start prior.

These were the clear standouts of the race with Chocante in third and running to 110 potentially one to follow as he goes up in trip.

Happy Clapper

The following race saw Happy Clapper return in good order with a win in the Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m), coming from off the speed to beat Tom Melbourne by just under a length with Invincible Gem third.

Happy Clapper returned a Timeform figure of 122, equal to his previous best achieved when runner up in the Doncaster Mile earlier in the year.

Happy Clapper is the highest rated winner of the race since Sincero in 2011 who ran to 124, two pounds higher than 2016 winner Hauraki.

The now seven-year-old gelding, who will take on Winx in the Group 1 George Main Stakes next start looks to have a big preparation ahead on the back of his first up win and can certainly give Winx some competition.

Tom Melbourne was good again in second after travelling wide throughout and ran to 116, the highest of his career and four pounds above his first up second placing.

Invincible Gem was unable to recapture her first up form and returned a Timeform figure of 113, two pounds below her Missile Stakes win.

Redzel

Redzel looks on target for an Everest slot, following his all the way win in the Group 3 Concorde Stakes (1000m).

Despite lining up in a field of only four, Kerrin McEvoy who rode five winners for the day took Redzel straight to the lead and never looked in danger, beating Spieth by two lengths with Nieta a further length away in third.

Redzel who has now won an impressive eight races from only 18 starts, ran to a Timeform rating of 121 for the fifth time in a row which shows amazing consistency from the five-year-old gelding.

The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained runner is the highest rated winner of the race since it became a Group 3 in 1997, with Private Steer in 2003 the only one to run a higher winning figure (after the mares allowance).

Spieth was solid enough in second and ran to 105, carrying 3kg less than Redzel and has struggled to run up to his second placings in the 2017 Darley Classic and Lightning Stakes where he ran to 121 on both occasions.

Winx was amazing, yet again, in taking out her 19th successive victory. She began well on this occasion (racing in ear muffs for the first time, after missing the start badly before her first-up win in the Warwick Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) here on 19 August and settled back in fifth place, behind a good tempo. Hugh Bowman took her to a distant fourth nearing the home turn, when conceding the leader (Red Excitement) about eight lengths. She went to second at the 200m, still some five lengths back, before coming with her relentless finishing bid to hit the front at the 50m and then go on to score courageously. Red Excitement, having his second run this preparation, went to the front as expected but Josh Parr led him run along, establishing a large advantage at the 800m. He was only overhauled in the final 50m after a bold performance for a very good second. The New Zealand-trained Chocante, having his first run since winning the Brisbane Cup (Gr 2, 2200m) at Doomben in June, chased the leader (Red Excitement) and put up a really good effort in holding on for third.
